Why I hate mediocre Thai food...

Every restaurants has problems...
J usually orders Pad Thai, the typical whitey dish, but that day he was feeling adventurous and ordered a chicken satay. I know that's not that adventurous, but it was different than his usual. I decided on Pad Kra Prao, beef with Thai basil and spices. Now I know that people are going to say, "Well, you gotta go to ____ or _____!!!" And yes it's true, I haven't given Thai food in LA much of a chance, considering Thai town has the largest Thai population outside of Thailand (useful tidbit from No Reservations). I've been meaning to try Sapp Coffee Shop and a few others I read about in blogs. I've given Thai restaurants in other cities chances. I've been to Tuk Tuk a few times and thought it was pleasant but nothing to write home about. I thought they concentrated more on ambiance than on the food, which is nice sometimes as a restaurant should also be enjoyable to sit in as well as eat. But food should be the most important part! For example, I love Soot Bull Jeep because they cook their meat on real hardwood but sometimes I wish it were a little cleaner. Not that I'm complaining, I don't even think I reek that much when coming out of the joint. My biggest beef with Thai food is that it's frankly too sweet. It's the Thai equivalent of teriyaki (meat candy) for adults. Take typical Pad Thai for instance: noodles coated in massive amounts of sugar and ketchupy dressing. I used to love the curries but stopped because they simply too sugary. But to me, pretty much most of the dishes on Thai menus taste laden with sugar, peanut sauce and/or coconut milk. It's not that I don't know how to order either, it's simply that things are too sweet for my taste. Imagine how sad it would be if sushi restaurants only served eel? I do, however, love almost all the soups at Thai restaurants. Give me a Yen Ta Four, Tum Yum Gai, seafood or beef noodle soup any day, and I'm a happy cat. I like larb gai, white sticky rice, fishcakes, and green papaya salad. I also like Thai basil and chilis, tamarind, kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass...I just happen to like dishes that I can taste all the above. Thai food is supposed to be a harmonious blend of hot, sour, salty and sweet.
The saddest salad ever. Actually the lettuce and cucumbers were crisp, my body was begging me to take a bite so I did. Still, it was part of the lunch special!
Sorry little satays, you bore me.
Meh.
At Toi, the satay was dry and spiceless, my Pad Kra Prao too sugary. I could taste a little chili and basil but it...was...mostly...sugar. I know that if I ordered something different such as Pad See Ew, it would taste almost exactly the same: wide rice noodles, sugary, maybe more hints of soy sauce. But the sad thing is that I think so many Thai restaurants are like this. Still, I can't be mad at Toi, the lunch specials were only 6 bucks each and we weren't hungry after eating half.
So until then, I have resolved to only order soups and appetizers when going out for Thai food. Like most people, Americans especially, I think it's the sugar that keeps people coming back for Thai food. I'll wait to visit Thailand.

i was never a fan of thai food until i actually had good thai food; i'd tried it in nyc, dc, and sf, but frankly never enjoyed it in the united states until i'd tried it here in los angeles--but not on the westside! for my money, it's got to be yai, or nothing (okay, i'll go to some others inc. sapp and ruen pair). also, north hollywood is supposed to have even better restaurants than hollywood proper. i live steps away from tuk tuk, but it's not an option anymore. that pervasive sweetness that you speak of is nonexistent in more authentic cuisine, and that typical pad thai of which you speak is not authentic. i can't think of a single dish that i truly enjoy at local thai places that is even remotely sugary sweet--if it's sweet it's because of that's what the ingredients natural flavours dictate. (although, i don't order barbecued/grilled meat dishes, so i don't know what the marinade is like).
i was a complete non-fan of thai food in the us, believe me; i truly thought that i had been to decent restaurants until i discovered how good it really could be. i urge you to reconsider.
Hi Santos,
Really? You'd never been a fan until moving here? I agree, I think the Westside pretty much sucks for all Asian food, especially Chinese and Thai-all the restaurants I've tried have been very sad. I guess I have been unfair because I guess I'm judging based on the majority of popular restaurants. I used to think it was good but now I've realized that I've been going to horribly unauthentic places. Everyone once in a while I'll luck out or order correctly but that was very rare. I will definitely have to try Yai or Sapp or venture out to North Hollywood. I didn't realize LA had such a huge Thai population.
Does Yai have sticky rice and green papaya salad?
hi there! i should preface that i've always liked thai food in asia, but didn't try it until after i had it in the states, and realized how mediocre general stateside was, even in so-called good restaurants. i didn't actually try thai food in thai town until relatively recently, and it compares favourably with the stuff in asia (although weirdly, it's different--i think quality of ingredients).
yai has sticky rice and both thai and laotian papaya salad--the thai version is a bit sweeter and lighter on the fish sauce, the laotian version has shrimp paste. you can get it with or without raw blue crab. i prefer ruen pair's papaya salad (both thai and laotian, with or without blue crab) , but i don't normally order it in any restaurant.
also, yes, chinese food pretty much sucks on the westside, doesn't it? i go to mandarette if i'm desperate, but mostly go to san gabriel or downtown.
North Hollywood is supposed to have great Thai food, and in particular the Wat Thai Buddhist Temple which has food stalls serving ridiculously cheap Thai food each weekend. Including papaya salad, by the way.
Apparently it's kind of like a fair, in that you buy tokens and then exchange the tokens for food.

I haven't been, but would like to someday. I haven't had bad experiences with Thai food here, but I almost always just get soup, so maybe that's why. I don't really have a sweet-loving palate, so maybe I should stick with the spicy soups. I like the tom kha gai at Chao Krung because they put jalapenos in it.
I only like the original Toi becase they have weird obscene art on the walls and a passable yellow curry. But be careful not to run over the jaywalking prostitutes outside!
Its because your not Than. I am thai and when I go to restaurants with non thais the food is always different, They don't cook it the same, probably because most people wouldn't get it.
On another note, yes Thai food is better in Thailand, most of what you order here is street food, restaurants serve a whole different set of foods with whole fish, crabs, different meat dishes etc....
Hopefully one day you'll get to experience some good Thai food!!
Michael, I am sure that the whole not being thai thing is true at certain establishments but I would guees it is not true at Toi. I only saw my fellow fair skinned folks. As far as not being adventurous when ordering at thai places, slanderous lies and half truths. It is true that I like to have a standard dish to try at any new restaurant. Mongolian beef for instance when at a new Chinese restaurant. It is only to guage to general quality of the place. And you know that I prefer the soups at thai spots. Toi really was sad and pitful in every way though. So tragic because it is cheap and close.
